About

Roots from 1918.

1918 Capital is a private family investment office. Our purpose has not changed since the firm was founded: to hold and compound a family’s capital carefully enough that the next generation inherits an institution rather than a problem.

1918

Milton P. Levy Sr. began National Disinfectant Company offering six products and a dream. The line featured products such as a coal tar disinfectant, an insecticide and a liquid hand soap to improve sanitation in hospitals, schools and public institutions.

A family office is a simple idea that is easy to over-complicate. Ours exists to do three things: decide where the family’s capital is invested, look after the administration that surrounds it, and make sure the people who come next understand both.

What we are

We are the investment office for a single family, together with a small number of families and institutions who invest alongside us on the same terms. We invest our own capital in everything we do, which removes most of the arguments that otherwise arise about whose interests are being served.

We are not a fund manager and we are not trying to become one. We do not raise capital on a schedule, we do not have a marketing calendar, and growth in assets is not a goal in itself. The scale we want is the scale at which the same small group of people can still know every material thing we own.

How we are organized

Investment decisions are made by a small team and reviewed against the standards set out in our philosophy rather than against a benchmark on a quarterly cycle. Custody, audit, valuation, tax and legal work sit with established independent firms, deliberately separated from the people making investment decisions.

Governance is documented, and the family’s own participation in it is expected rather than optional. The most consequential work this office does is often not an investment at all — it is making sure the generation that has not yet taken responsibility for this capital is prepared to.

How we think about continuity

An office whose roots run back to 1918 has lived through more than one period in which the prevailing assumptions turned out to be wrong. The practical lesson we take from that is modest: avoid arrangements that require the future to resemble the present, keep obligations well inside the capacity to meet them, and prefer assets that can simply be held when the alternative is to sell into a market that has stopped functioning.

Working with us

We take on very few new relationships, and only where the horizon and expectations genuinely match ours. If that sounds like a reason not to get in touch, it is not meant to be — we would simply rather have a candid conversation early than a disappointing one later.
